ABOUT HORROR FILMS

Horror films have been considered mostly a niche genre, however, they have had a fervent, loyal and enthusiastic following since the first horror movie ever made, the 2-minute long "Le Manoir Du Diable" (The Devil's Castle), in 1896.  They are unsettling, frightening, stimulating.  They toy and invoke our worst fears, nightmares and vulnerabilities.  Neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux (New York University) says the complex human brain with its enormous capacity for thinking, reaoning and just plain musing, allows us to worry in ways other animalis can't.  Fear is not merely a biological reaction, but an emotion derived from both deep-seeded evolutionary factors, as well as newly learned cautions.

Simply put, in a strange way, people like to be challenged, to feel frightened, to feel the adrenaline rush. They enjoy a glimpse of the horrific, but from a safe distance, to escape from the mundane life.

Numbers crunched by IMDb found that films with ghosts are far and away the most popular movie monters since the birth of film.  Ghosts have been the most popular monsters in five separate decades.

According the The Hollywood Reporter, horror is the most profitable genre around.  You can make a horror movie for less than US$5 million and when they work, you get an "Insidious, a "Sinister" and it can go to gross US$100 million.  And horror plays equally well with male and female audiences.

Horror is concept driven, not star-driven.
